The OSG 1400107101 is a plug chamfer thread forming tap designed for right-hand, through-hole threading in a 4-48 UNF thread form. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is ground to an H3 thread limit and a Class 3B fit, making it suited for precision threading applications where tight tolerances are required. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, it handles elevated heat and friction typical in production tapping. It is installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in both manual and CNC tapping operations.
This tap is rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It is intended for through-hole threading applications. With 48 threads per inch and a plug chamfer of 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads, it provides a gradual thread lead-in suitable for most general production and maintenance threading tasks. The HY-PRO NRT series designation identifies it as part of OSG's no-chip thread forming line, making it a practical choice for high-volume or close-tolerance work where chip evacuation is a concern.
Designed for through-hole threading operations in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Suitable for manual and CNC tapping machines configured for 4-48 UNF right-hand thread forming.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap pilot hole — consult an appropriate tap drill chart for the correct forming tap drill diameter before use. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material before tapping. Secure the workpiece and verify spindle alignment before engaging the tap, particularly in CNC setups. Follow shop safety procedures and machine manufacturer guidelines for speed and feed settings appropriate to the material being tapped.
