The OSG 1400104905 is a thread forming tap designed for creating 4-40 UNC internal threads in blind holes. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chip generation. This tap features a cobalt construction with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating for extended tool life in demanding materials. It is configured with a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, allowing thread production close to the bottom of a blind hole. The 3B class of fit and H3 thread limit make it suitable for close-tolerance threading applications. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals use this tap in production and repair operations.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The bottoming chamfer configuration makes it well matched for applications where thread depth must be maximized within a limited bore depth. The right-hand thread direction and standard UNC form fit conventional tapping setups on manual or CNC machines. It belongs to OSG series 14001, marketed under the HY-PRO NRT trade name.
Designed for blind hole threading operations producing 4-40 UNC right-hand internal threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists or tool-and-die technicians using a compatible tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC tapping cycle. Ensure the spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material before engaging the tap. Because this is a thread forming tap, the pilot hole diameter must be sized correctly for forming operations — use the forming tap drill chart for the specific material; a standard cut-tap drill size will produce an incorrect fit. Always apply appropriate tapping fluid and verify machine setup before beginning the tapping cycle.
