The OSG 1400103808 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile materials without cutting. Running at 3-48 UNC with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, this tap displaces material rather than removing chips, producing stronger thread forms with a smoother finish. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with titanium carbonitride (TiCN), it handles elevated heat and abrasion that standard HSS taps cannot sustain. The H3 thread limit keeps tolerance consistent for a 2B class of fit. Machinists and tool and die technicians working on small-fastener threading operations will reach for this tap when thread integrity and hole quality matter most.
The 1400103808 is engineered for blind hole threading in a range of metallic workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer allows thread forming to begin close to the bottom of blind holes, maximizing usable thread length. It fits the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, a product family built for form tapping in demanding production and job-shop environments where tool life and dimensional consistency are critical. This tap is appropriate for CNC machining centers and manual tapping setups alike.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces; part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series (Series 14001).
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication at the tap-workpiece interface to prevent galling, particularly in stainless steel and hardened materials. Secure the workpiece and verify spindle alignment before tapping to avoid tap breakage in small-diameter applications. Power down or disengage the machine before changing or inspecting the tap. Follow shop-standard speeds and feeds for form tapping in the specific workpiece material, as forming taps generally run at lower RPM than equivalent cut taps of the same diameter.
