The OSG 1400102701 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting chips. It produces a 2-56 UNC right-hand thread using a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it well suited for blind hole applications where full thread depth close to the bottom is required. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles tough materials including alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, carbon steel, and aluminum. Thread limit is H4. It is installed by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and precision maintenance technicians working in production or MRO environments.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. Its modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard plug chamfer. The steam oxide finish helps reduce friction and galling during the forming process. At 1.75 inches overall length with a shank diameter of 0.141 inches, the 1400102701 fits standard tap holders and chucks sized for small-diameter taps. It is appropriate for precision machining operations in aerospace, automotive, and general manufacturing where chip-free thread forming is preferred over cutting.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply. Compatible with standard tap holders and chucks accepting a 0.141-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from a standard cut-tap drill size and must be verified before use. A licensed machinist or trained technician should operate the tapping equipment and confirm correct spindle speed and lubrication for the workpiece material. Power down and secure the machine before changing or chucking the tap. Do not use this tap in through-hole applications expecting standard cut-tap drill sizes, as undersized pilot holes will damage the tap or workpiece.
