The OSG 1400102700 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile and machinable metals without cutting. Sized at 2-56 UNC with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, this tap works in blind hole threading applications where thread depth control is critical. The cobalt construction provides heat resistance and wear life in demanding materials. Overall length is 1.75 inches with a thread length of 0.437 inches and a tapping depth of 0.476 inches. The H4 thread limit designation ensures dimensional consistency across production runs. Licensed machinists and toolroom operators are the primary installers.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it appropriate for applications requiring threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. Right-hand thread direction is standard. The HY-PRO NRT series is a thread forming design, meaning it displaces material rather than cutting chips, which is particularly advantageous in applications where chip evacuation is difficult or where stronger threads are required.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from standard cut tap drill sizes — consult published forming tap drill charts for the correct pre-drill diameter before use. Secure the workpiece and use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil compatible with the workpiece material. Ensure the tapping machine or hand tap wrench is aligned axially to avoid tap breakage, especially at this small diameter. Follow shop safety procedures and machine lockout protocols before tooling changes.
