The OSG 1400102500 is a cobalt thread forming tap designed for producing 2-56 UNC internal threads without cutting chips. Thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, which results in stronger threads and eliminates chip removal concerns in blind hole applications. This tap features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H2 thread limit holds a 3B class of fit. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish and no coolant-through feature, it is suited for production and maintenance tapping in a range of metallic materials. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians are the primary users.
This tap is designed for blind hole threading operations on machine tools such as drill presses, CNC machining centers, and tapping machines. The 2-56 UNC thread size is common in small fastener applications found in precision instruments, electronics assemblies, and light mechanical components. The cobalt construction and right-hand thread direction make it appropriate for tapping alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces where heat resistance and edge retention are required.

Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from a standard cut tap drill size — consult an OSG or industry forming tap drill chart before setup. Secure the workpiece and use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material before beginning. On CNC equipment, verify spindle speed and feed rate are matched to the tap pitch and material to avoid tap breakage. Always power down or lock out equipment before manually loading or unloading taps.
