The OSG 1400102305 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for bottoming applications in blind holes using the 2-56 UNC thread standard. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating for improved wear resistance and heat tolerance. With an H3 thread limit and a Class 2B fit, it delivers consistent, accurate threads suited to precision fastener applications. Machinists and toolroom technicians install this tap in production and maintenance environments where fine-thread reliability is critical.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The bottoming chamfer — 1 to 1.5 threads — allows the tap to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole, maximizing thread engagement depth. It is well suited for small-diameter tapping operations in machining centers, drill presses, and hand-tapping setups where a 2-56 UNC thread is required.
Designed for use in blind hole threading applications requiring a 2-56 UNC thread form. Suitable for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces per the manufacturer material application data.
Thread forming taps require a different pilot hole diameter than cutting taps — always consult a thread forming tap drill chart for the correct pre-drill size before use. Power down and secure all equipment before changing or inspecting taps. Apply appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material to reduce tool wear and improve thread quality. This tap is intended for use by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel familiar with tapping speeds, feeds, and fixturing for small-diameter taps.
