The OSG 1400101501 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or removing material. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this bottoming chamfer tap is suited for threading blind holes to near-full depth in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It produces a 1-72 UNF right-hand thread to a Class 2B fit at an H3 thread limit. The overall length is 1.688 inches, and the tap weighs 0.02 pounds. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users of this tap in production and maintenance applications.
This tap is used wherever a 1-72 UNF internal thread is required in a blind hole. The bottoming chamfer, with 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads, allows threading to the bottom of shallow blind holes where a plug or taper chamfer cannot reach full thread depth. It is well suited for precision work in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components. The HY-PRO NRT series is designed specifically for thread forming rather than thread cutting, making it appropriate for ductile materials where chip-free threading is an advantage.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring a 1-72 UNF internal thread to Class 2B tolerance.
Thread forming taps require a different pilot hole diameter than cutting taps — use the correct forming tap drill chart for 1-72 UNF to determine the proper hole size before tapping. Apply an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil to the workpiece before use; do not run this tap dry. Secure the workpiece firmly and use a calibrated torque or CNC rigid-tapping setup to avoid tap breakage in small-diameter applications. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear regularly, as cobalt tooling in hardened materials is subject to fatigue at the shank-thread junction.
