The OSG 1400100801 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or removing material. Sized at 1-64 UNC with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, this tap is suited for blind hole threading applications where a near-full thread depth close to the bottom of the hole is required. Constructed from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and performance in demanding materials. Overall length is 1.688 inches with a thread limit of H2 and a Class 3B fit.
This tap is intended for use in blind hole threading across a range of metals including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer allows the tap to begin forming threads very close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it a practical choice in tight-tolerance production or repair work. Right-hand thread direction and standard UNC sizing make it compatible with typical machine tapping setups in industrial and job shop environments. Licensed machinists and toolroom professionals will find it appropriate for both manual and CNC tapping operations.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel (material application codes P and N). Designed for blind hole threading applications in the 1-64 UNC thread size. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14001.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size larger than that used for cut taps of the same thread size — consult OSG or a standard thread forming drill chart before drilling the pilot hole. Appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound should be applied to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Power down and secure the workpiece before tap engagement in manual setups. Operate at the recommended surface footage for cobalt tooling in the specific workpiece material.
