The OSG 1241605 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 3/8-16 UNC holes in a wide range of metals. The spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the cut rather than packing them into the flutes, making this tap well suited for through-hole applications where chip evacuation is critical. Built from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers improved surface hardness and lubricity compared to uncoated HSS taps. The plug chamfer distributes cutting load across several leading threads for a controlled, stable entry. This tap is a standard tool for machinists, maintenance techs, and fabricators working in production or job-shop environments.
The 1241605 is rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. The 2B class of fit produces a standard tolerance internal thread suitable for most general-purpose fastener assemblies. With a right-hand thread direction and H5 thread limit, this tap is a practical choice for CNC tapping cycles, drill-press tapping, or hand tapping when properly supported. It is sold individually and is appropriate wherever a 3/8-16 UNC through-hole thread is required.
Designed to cut 3/8-16 UNC internal threads to a 2B class of fit in through-hole applications across aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel workpieces.
Tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using a properly aligned tap holder or tapping head to prevent tap breakage. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle or tap wrench is aligned perpendicular to the hole before starting the cut. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tool life. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use, and never force a tap that has stalled in the hole.
