The OSG 1241602 is a spiral point tap designed for threading through-holes in a wide range of metals and alloys. It cuts a 3/8-16 UNC right-hand thread to a 2B class of fit and features a plug chamfer for controlled thread engagement at the start of the cut. The tap is manufactured from high-speed steel and carries an elektraLUBE coating that reduces friction and heat buildup during cutting, extending tool life in production and maintenance applications. Three flutes provide chip clearance while the spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the tap and out of the hole, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations.
This tap is intended for use in through-hole applications across a broad range of materials including low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, hardened steel, cast iron, aluminum, and cast aluminum. It fits standard machining, maintenance, and repair workflows where a 3/8-16 UNC internal thread is required. The H5 thread limit provides a controlled oversize condition appropriate for plated finishes or applications requiring a snug 2B fit. The 1.25-inch thread length accommodates typical through-hole depths encountered in structural and mechanical assemblies.
Designed as a drop-in replacement tap for 3/8-16 UNC through-hole tapping operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials; compatible with standard tap handles, tapping heads, and CNC rigid tapping setups that accept a round-shank tap in this size range.
Spiral point taps of this type are installed by a machinist or maintenance technician using a tap wrench, tapping stand, or CNC tapping cycle. Always match the tap drill size to the required thread percentage before starting; a letter Q drill is commonly used for 3/8-16 UNC to achieve approximately 75 percent thread engagement. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and use cutting fluid or the built-in elektraLUBE coating benefit to maintain proper lubrication, particularly in steel and cast iron. Do not reverse the tap under power in a rigid tapping setup without confirming the machine spindle supports synchronized reversing.
