The OSG 1207605 is a spiral point plug tap designed for cutting internal 6-40 UNF threads in a wide range of materials. Built from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life compared to uncoated HSS taps. The plug chamfer distributes cutting load across the lead threads, making it suitable for through-hole applications. With a 2-flute geometry and right-hand thread direction, chips are pushed forward and out of the hole. The tap is ground to an H2 thread limit and meets a 2B class of fit, which aligns with standard UNF tolerance requirements used in precision fastening assemblies. Overall length is 2 inches with a thread length of 0.39 inches.
This tap is used in production and maintenance machining environments where fine-thread tapping of small-diameter holes is required. It handles a broad range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. Typical applications include tapping threaded holes in machine components, fixtures, and assemblies that require a 6-40 UNF standard thread. It is used by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working in manual or CNC tapping setups.
Designed for tapping 6-40 UNF through-holes in materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. Part of OSG Series 105.
Always secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the spindle or tap handle is properly aligned to avoid tap breakage in small-diameter holes. Apply a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat and improve thread finish. For CNC applications, verify that the machine is set to rigid tapping mode and that feed rate matches the 40 TPI pitch before engaging. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use, as small-diameter taps are susceptible to breakage under side load.
