The OSG 1206600 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 4-48 UNF internal threads in a wide range of metals. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, keeping the flutes clear during through-hole tapping operations. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright finish, this plug-chamfer tap suits general-purpose threading in production and maintenance environments. It carries a 2B class of fit, the standard tolerance for most commercial fastener applications, and an H2 thread limit for consistent results across compatible materials. Licensed machinists and toolmakers are the primary installers of this tap in manual and CNC tapping setups.
This tap is suited for through-hole tapping in both manual drill press and CNC machining center applications. Its 4-48 UNF thread size targets small-diameter, fine-pitch fastener work common in instrument assembly, electronics enclosures, and precision mechanical components. The two-flute design keeps the cross-section strong at this small diameter while providing adequate chip clearance. Compatible material applications include aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel.
Designed for through-hole tapping of 4-48 UNF threads in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel workpieces per OSG Series 105.
This tap is installed by machinists using a manual tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid tapping cycle - always align the tap concentrically with the drilled pilot hole before applying torque. Use a cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. Back the tap out periodically when hand-tapping in steel to break chips. Never force a bottomed tap against the base of a blind hole without confirming the chamfer lead is appropriate for the application.
