The OSG 1200700400 is a standard NPT pipe tap designed for cutting 1/4-18 tapered pipe threads in a variety of base metals. Built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap delivers consistent thread form for pipe fitting and fluid-system assembly applications. It features 4 flutes with a regular hook geometry and a thread length of 1.0625 inches, making it suited for through-thread and moderate-depth pipe tap work. With an overall length of 2.437 inches and a shank diameter of 0.5625 inches, it fits standard tap wrenches and machine holders used by plumbers, pipefitters, and HVAC technicians. The Series 12007 designation places it in OSG standard tooling.
This tap is appropriate for threading pipe ports, fittings, and manifolds in residential and commercial plumbing, HVAC refrigerant and gas piping, and general fluid-system fabrication. It cuts NPT taper threads per ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 standards. Compatible material applications include carbon steel, cast iron, and aluminum, making it a versatile tool for mixed-material trade work. It is sold individually and intended for use in hand-tapping or low-speed machine tapping setups where controlled feed is essential for clean NPT thread form.
Designed for cutting 1/4-18 NPT tapered pipe threads in carbon steel, cast iron, and aluminum workpieces. Fits standard tap wrenches and machine tap holders sized for a 0.5625-inch shank.
NPT pipe taps are installed by licensed plumbers, pipefitters, and HVAC technicians. Before tapping, ensure the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 1/4-18 NPT per standard reference charts. Apply cutting fluid throughout the tapping operation to reduce heat and extend tool life. For hand tapping, use a calibrated tap wrench and back off periodically to break chips. Never force a tap against resistance, as high-speed steel taps are brittle and susceptible to breakage under side load or binding.
