The OSG 1105611608 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 1/4-28 UNF internal threads in through-hole applications. Built from powdered metal and finished with a TiCN coating, it handles demanding materials including hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, titanium, and alloy steel. The plug chamfer geometry eases entry in through-hole setups, while the 3-flute spiral point design pushes chips ahead of the tap to clear the cut zone. The H4 thread limit holds tolerance for a 2B class of fit, suitable for standard fastener applications. At 2.5 inches overall length with a 0.988-inch thread length and a 0.255-inch shank diameter, this tap fits standard tap holders used in machining and fabrication work.
This tap is suited for machine tapping operations in production and job-shop environments where the workpiece materials are difficult to cut. Typical applications include aerospace and industrial component work involving titanium, high-nickel alloys, and hardened steels where coating-free taps wear prematurely. It is run as a right-hand tap and is not configured for coolant-through delivery, making it appropriate for flood coolant or tapping fluid applied at the spindle. Machinists, toolmakers, and CNC operators in metalworking shops are the primary users.
Designed for use in 1/4-28 UNF through-hole tapping operations; compatible with standard straight-shank tap holders and quick-change tapping heads that accept a 0.255-inch shank diameter.
Install this tap in a rigid tap holder or floating tap chuck to minimize runout and protect the tool from breakage. Secure the workpiece fully before beginning the tapping cycle and confirm spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material before engaging. Apply tapping fluid or ensure adequate flood coolant flow at the cutting zone, as this tap is not configured for coolant-through delivery. Machinists should verify hole diameter and depth meet pre-tap drill specifications before use.
