The OSG 1101701408 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 1/2-13 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) with a Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap delivers extended tool life and reduced friction in demanding production environments. The plug chamfer configuration makes it well suited for through-hole applications where chips are pushed forward and cleared from the cutting zone. With an H3 thread limit and 3B class of fit, it produces threads to tight tolerance standards required in precision assembly work. Licensed machinists, toolroom mechanics, and production operators are the primary users.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations on materials including aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and hardened steel. It is a right-hand tap intended for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines. The 3-flute geometry and spiral point design support chip evacuation in production-volume through-hole applications. Coolant-through capability is not supported on this model.
Designed as a production-grade replacement or standard-stock spiral point tap for 1/2-13 UNC through-hole threading operations in Series 11017 OSG tooling programs. Suitable for use in any tapping holder or floating tap adapter accepting a 0.367-inch shank diameter.
This tap should be installed in a tapping chuck or floating tap holder rated for the shank diameter. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle speed and feed rate are set to the tap manufacturer recommendations for the specific workpiece material before cutting. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant directed at the tap entry point to manage heat and chip evacuation, even though the tool does not support internal coolant-through delivery. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear at regular intervals, particularly when running hardened or stainless steel.
