The OSG 1045100 is a straight flute plug tap designed for threading 8-32 UNC internal threads in a wide range of metals. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it delivers reliable performance in through-hole and blind-hole tapping applications. The plug chamfer features a gradual lead-in that distributes cutting forces across the first several threads, reducing the chance of tap breakage during entry. With 3 flutes and an H2 thread limit, the 1045100 holds tight dimensional tolerances consistent with a 3B class of fit. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a thread length of 0.469 inches. Licensed machinists, toolroom operators, and trade mechanics performing equipment repair or fabrication work are the primary users.
This tap is suited for threading aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. The straight flute geometry works well in through-hole applications where chips can be pushed forward or backed out of the hole without chip-curl interference. The plug chamfer style makes it appropriate as a starting tap when a taper tap is not required, and it can also follow a taper tap for deeper thread engagement. It is part of OSG Series 103 and is well suited for hand tapping and machine tapping setups in production or maintenance environments.
Designed as an OEM-style straight flute tap for 8-32 UNC internal thread applications in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel workpieces. Part of OSG Series 103.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or trade technicians using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC machine set to the appropriate feed rate for the thread pitch. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole before beginning the cut. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and improve thread quality. Back the tap out periodically to break chips when working in deeper holes.
