The OSG 1010902 is a straight flute tap designed to cut internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel, it produces a 2-56 UNC right-hand thread with a taper chamfer that guides entry into the workpiece and distributes the cutting load across multiple teeth. With 3 flutes and an H2 thread limit, this tap holds tight dimensional tolerances suited to production and repair work alike. The overall length is 1.75 inches, and the thread length is 0.4375 inches. It is installed by machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench or tapping machine.
This tap is sized for the number 2-56 UNC thread form, one of the finer unified coarse threads used in small fastener applications including instrument assemblies, electronics enclosures, and light mechanical assemblies. The taper chamfer style makes it well suited for through-hole tapping where chip clearance is manageable. Compatible materials include aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel, covering most general machining and maintenance scenarios. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Back the tap out periodically to break chips and prevent binding, particularly in blind-hole applications.
