The OATEY COMPANY 39177 is a male iron pipe (MIP) shock absorber designed to eliminate water hammer in residential and light commercial plumbing systems. Sized at 1/2 inch MIP, this device absorbs the hydraulic shockwave that occurs when a valve or fixture closes suddenly, protecting pipes, fittings, and appliances from pressure surges. The 39177 meets low-lead compliance requirements, making it suitable for potable water applications. Sold in packages of six, it is a practical stocking item for plumbers servicing multiple fixtures or performing new rough-in work.
This shock absorber is installed at individual supply stops, washing machine valves, dishwasher connections, and other quick-closing valve locations where water hammer is a known issue. It is well suited for residential retrofit work as well as new construction plumbing. The 1/2 inch MIP connection is a standard size that fits the majority of residential supply line configurations. Plumbers and pipefitters handling fixture rough-ins or service calls involving banging pipes are the primary installers of this device.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and new-installation shock absorber for residential and light commercial plumbing systems using 1/2 inch MIP supply connections.
Shock absorbers of this type are installed by licensed plumbers in accordance with local plumbing codes and the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Shut off the water supply and relieve line pressure before installation. Thread the 1/2 inch MIP fitting into the appropriate tee or valve body using thread-seal tape or pipe joint compound rated for potable water. Do not over-tighten the threaded connection, as this can damage the fitting or the absorber body.
