The OATEY 31232 is a PTFE-fortified pipe joint compound designed to lubricate and seal threaded pipe connections. Sold as a 16 fluid ounce container, this white, non-hardening paste stays workable after application and will not separate or shrink in the joint over time. It is non-toxic, making it safer to handle in occupied spaces and on potable water systems. Plumbers and pipefitters reach for this compound when threading up gas, water, and steam lines where a reliable, code-acceptable thread seal is required without the mess of tape alone.
This compound is suited for residential and light commercial plumbing applications. It works on metal and compatible plastic threaded fittings, including iron pipe, brass, copper, and stainless steel connections. The PTFE content reduces galling on fine threads and makes future disassembly easier. It is commonly applied during rough-in and service work on water supply lines, gas distribution piping, and hydronic heating systems where a non-hardening sealant is specified.
Designed as an OEM-style thread sealant for use on metal and compatible plastic threaded pipe joints in plumbing, gas, and hydronic heating applications.
Pipe joint compound is applied by licensed plumbers and pipefitters working under applicable plumbing codes such as the IPC or local jurisdictional equivalents. Shut off and depressurize the line before disassembling or making up new threaded connections. Apply an even coat to the male threads before assembly and wipe away any excess squeeze-out after tightening. Always verify that the compound selected is approved for the specific pipe medium, particularly on gas and potable water systems, before placing the joint into service.
