The OATEY 31231 is a white, non-hardening pipe joint compound with PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) formulated to lubricate and seal threaded pipe connections. It goes on as a smooth paste, fills thread voids, and creates a pressure-resistant seal that resists separation over time. The compound remains workable after application, making disassembly and joint adjustment straightforward. At 0.983 pounds per unit, it is a standard 8 fl oz container sized for everyday trade use. Licensed plumbers and pipefitters rely on this compound for sealing threaded fittings during new construction and service work.
This joint compound is applied to threaded pipe joints across residential and light commercial plumbing systems. It is appropriate for use where a non-toxic, non-hardening sealant is required, making it well-suited for potable water service lines, gas distribution piping (where permitted by local code), and general threaded fitting assemblies encountered in routine plumbing service calls.
Designed as an OEM-style sealant for use on threaded pipe joints in standard plumbing and piping systems. Verify suitability for specific pipe materials and media before application.
Apply to all fittings and threaded joints by licensed plumbers or qualified pipefitters in accordance with local plumbing codes and the IPC. Shut off the water supply and depressurize the line before breaking or making any threaded connection. Apply compound to the male threads only, working it into the thread grooves for a uniform coat, and avoid introducing compound into the pipe bore where it could contaminate flow. Allow adequate makeup time before pressurizing the system.
