The NICHOLSON 39911N is a Swiss-pattern pillar file designed for precision hand-filing work in metal fabrication, toolroom, and maintenance applications. This 6-inch file features a Cut 2 double-cut tooth pattern on a rectangular cross-section, producing a standard level of precision suitable for filing flat surfaces, slots, and keyways. At 0.47 inches wide and 0.16 inches thick, the regular pillar profile provides the narrow body needed to work in confined areas. The file ships with a tang for use with a compatible handle. Machinists, toolmakers, maintenance technicians, and skilled tradespeople are the primary users.
This file is suited for light material removal and finishing on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including steel, aluminum, and brass. The double-cut tooth geometry accelerates stock removal compared to single-cut files at the same grade, while the Cut 2 rating keeps surface finish within standard tolerances. The 6-inch overall length makes it practical for benchtop vise work and portable job-site use. It is a common choice for deburring machined parts, fitting keyways, and dressing worn tooling surfaces.
Designed as a standard Swiss-pattern pillar file compatible with any file handle sized for a 6-inch tang-style file.
Always fit a properly sized handle onto the tang before use to prevent hand injury from the exposed tang point. Secure the workpiece in a bench vise before filing to maintain control and accuracy. File teeth are hardened and brittle — do not use this file to strike, pry, or apply lateral bending force. Inspect the file for cracks or missing teeth before each use and replace if damaged.
