The Minwax 64444 is a water-based Polycrylic protective finish in a clear semi-gloss sheen, designed to protect and preserve bare wood and stained wood surfaces. It dries to a hard, crystal-clear film that resists yellowing, making it well suited for use over light-colored woods where a water-clear topcoat is critical. The formula has very little odor compared to oil-based alternatives and cleans up with soap and water. It comes in a 1-quart container. Finish carpenters, cabinet makers, and general contractors apply this product as a final protective coat over trim, furniture, cabinets, and millwork.
This finish is used in residential and light commercial interior woodworking applications. It is appropriate over raw wood, stained wood, and previously finished surfaces that have been properly prepared. Its exceptional clarity makes it a preferred topcoat over light woods such as maple, ash, and birch, where an oil-based finish might introduce an amber tint. It is also compatible for use over Minwax water-based wood stains, making it a natural pairing in a water-based stain-and-seal system.
Stated as compatible for use over light woods and Minwax water-based wood stains. Designed as an interior protective topcoat for bare or stained wood surfaces.
Application is typically performed by finish carpenters, cabinet finishers, or experienced DIYers following standard surface-prep procedures. Sand the substrate to a smooth, clean surface and remove all dust before applying. Apply with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush or foam applicator in thin, even coats; avoid overbrushing. Allow each coat to dry fully and lightly scuff-sand between coats with fine-grit sandpaper before applying the next.
