The MILWAUKEE TOOL 49-57-5145 is a straight flute tap designed for cutting internal M8x1 threads in through-holes and shallow blind holes. Built from high-carbon steel with a black oxide finish, this tap delivers durable cutting performance in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The plug chamfer configuration provides 3 to 5 chamfered leading threads, making it the standard choice for general-purpose tapping where the tap can pass through or nearly through the workpiece. At 2.75 inches overall length and a thread length of 31.75 millimeters, it fits standard tap wrenches and tapping heads used in machine shop and field maintenance work.
This tap is suited for maintenance, repair, and fabrication tasks requiring metric M8x1 threads. It is used in general metalworking, equipment repair, and field service applications across mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical trades. The 4-flute straight flute geometry is most effective in materials that produce broken chips, such as cast iron and brass, and in through-hole applications where chip evacuation is not restricted. The 2B class of fit produces a standard tolerance thread compatible with most commercial M8 fasteners.
Designed as a standard M8x1 plug tap for use with conventional tap wrenches, T-handle wrenches, and machine tapping heads that accept a straight shank tap in the corresponding shank diameter.
Tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist or trade professional following standard thread-cutting procedures. Always secure the workpiece and use appropriate cutting fluid for the base material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Apply consistent, controlled torque and back the tap off periodically to break and clear chips, particularly in deeper holes. Do not force the tap if resistance increases suddenly, as high-carbon steel taps are brittle and susceptible to breakage under torsional overload.
