The MIDLAND INDUSTRIES 973985LF is a lead-free bronze elbow fitting designed for transitions between plastic pipe and threaded male iron pipe (MIP) connections in plumbing systems. It accepts a 1-1/4 inch insert on one end and a 1-1/4 inch MIP connection on the other, allowing a 90-degree directional change while joining plastic supply lines to threaded metal fittings. Constructed from lead-free bronze, this elbow meets drinking water safety requirements, making it appropriate for potable water applications. Licensed plumbers and plumbing contractors are the primary installers of this fitting in both residential and light commercial settings.
This elbow is used where a plastic pipe run - such as PEX, CPVC, or polyethylene - must change direction and transition to a male threaded connection. Typical scenarios include supply line routing near manifolds, fixture shutoffs, and water heater connections where plastic tubing meets threaded port entries. The insert end barbs onto the pipe and is secured with a clamp or crimp ring, while the MIP end threads directly into a female threaded port. It is suited for both new construction rough-in and retrofit plumbing repairs.
Designed as an OEM-style insert fitting for plastic pipe plumbing systems requiring a 1-1/4 inch insert-to-MIP elbow transition in residential or light commercial applications.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with local plumbing codes and the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Shut off the water supply and relieve system pressure before cutting into any existing line. The insert end requires a properly sized clamp or crimp ring tool for a secure, leak-free connection. Apply thread sealant tape or compound to the MIP threads before assembly and hand-tighten before using a wrench to avoid overtightening the bronze fitting.
