The MIDLAND INDUSTRIES 970838 is a heavy-duty 6-band no-hub coupling designed to join cast iron or compatible drain, waste, and vent pipe in plumbing systems. Constructed from 316 stainless steel bands and a neoprene rubber sleeve, it delivers a rated working pressure of 4.3 psi and handles temperatures from -30 to 140 degrees F. The 6-band design distributes clamping load evenly across the joint, which is the defining characteristic of heavy-duty no-hub couplings. Licensed plumbers install this fitting during new construction or repair of DWV stacks and drain lines.
This coupling is intended for 12-inch no-hub pipe connections on both ends. It is well suited for commercial and residential plumbing applications where heavy-duty coupling strength is required, such as large-diameter cast iron DWV systems in multi-story buildings, mechanical rooms, and below-grade drain runs. The no-hub design eliminates the need for lead and oakum joints, allowing faster and more consistent assembly in tight spaces.
Designed as an OEM-style heavy-duty no-hub coupling for 12-inch no-hub cast iron or compatible DWV pipe connections. Both connection ends accept 12-inch no-hub pipe.
Installation is performed by a licensed plumber following applicable IPC or local plumbing code requirements. Shut off flow and depressurize or drain the affected line before cutting in or replacing a coupling. Use a calibrated no-hub torque wrench and tighten bands to the specified 80 inch-pound torque value to avoid over-tightening the rubber sleeve or stripping the band hardware. Inspect pipe ends for burrs, cracks, or misalignment before seating the sleeve.
