The MIDLAND INDUSTRIES 948173L is a 3/4-inch brass ball valve with a locking handle, designed for manual shutoff and flow control in plumbing, HVAC, and industrial piping systems. The valve connects via male pipe thread (MPT) inlet to female pipe thread (FPT) outlet and carries a working pressure rating of 600 psi WOG (Water, Oil, Gas). Constructed with a brass body, brass ball, and brass stem, it uses PTFE seat, PTFE seal, and PTFE packing for reliable shutoff across a wide temperature range. The locking handle prevents accidental operation, making it well suited for installations where inadvertent valve actuation is a safety concern.
This valve is appropriate for residential and light commercial applications including potable water lines, hydronic heating systems, gas distribution piping, and compressed air service within its rated parameters. The 3/4-14 thread size fits standard NPT piping. The MPT x FPT configuration allows inline installation without additional adapters in most piping scenarios. Plumbers and pipefitters are the primary trade installers, though HVAC technicians frequently use this type of valve for zone isolation and equipment shutoff in hydronic systems.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-install ball valve for 3/4-inch NPT piping systems in plumbing, HVAC hydronic, gas, and industrial fluid service applications.
Installation should be performed by a licensed plumber or pipefitter in accordance with applicable local codes, the International Plumbing Code (IPC), or the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) for gas service. Shut off and depressurize the supply line and drain the system before removing an existing valve or making new connections. Apply appropriate thread sealant to male threads before assembly and tighten to hand-snug plus wrench-firm - do not overtighten brass fittings, as this can crack the body. Verify the locking handle is engaged after commissioning to confirm desired valve position is secured.
