The MIDLAND INDUSTRIES 77196 is a copper sweat reducing coupling used to transition between two different pipe diameters in a single inline connection. It joins a 4-inch line to a 2-1/2-inch line using a standard sweat (solder) joint on both ends. This type of fitting is a staple in commercial and residential plumbing, HVAC hydronic piping, and mechanical systems where copper distribution lines change size. Licensed plumbers and pipefitters install this fitting during new construction, system expansion, or retrofit work wherever a direct diameter reduction is needed without additional adapters or offsets.
This reducing coupling is suited for copper sweat piping systems in applications such as chilled water lines, domestic hot and cold water distribution, and hydronic heating runs. The 4-inch by 2-1/2-inch size is typically found in larger commercial or light industrial piping systems rather than standard residential branch lines. It is installed inline wherever the main run steps down to a smaller distribution branch or equipment connection point.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-stock fitting for copper sweat piping systems requiring a 4-inch to 2-1/2-inch inline reducing connection.
Installation is performed by a licensed plumber or pipefitter following applicable IPC or local mechanical code requirements. Shut off and depressurize the piping system completely before cutting and fitting. Both pipe ends must be cleaned, deburred, and fluxed before soldering to ensure a leak-free joint. Do not apply heat to the fitting while the system is pressurized or while combustible materials are in proximity to the work area.
