A close nipple has no unthreaded center - the two sets of threads meet in the middle, making it the shortest possible threaded connector between two female-threaded fittings. This fitting measures 2 inches in diameter with a 2-11.5 thread form and weighs 0.18 pounds. Plumbers, pipefitters, and mechanical contractors use close nipples when a standard hex nipple or longer nipple would not fit in the available space.
