The MIDLAND INDUSTRIES 73981 is a reducing hose nipple designed to transition between a 2-inch hose barb and a 1-1/2-inch male NPTF threaded connection. Machined from 304 stainless steel, this fitting delivers corrosion resistance suitable for fluid transfer lines in demanding service environments. The NPTF thread - 1-1/2-11-1/2 - creates a pressure-tight mechanical seal without relying solely on sealant tape. The barbed end retains hose securely when used with an appropriately sized clamp. At 0.7 pounds, the fitting is compact and straightforward to install in tight plumbing or industrial fluid system configurations.
This reducing nipple is used where a hose line must couple to a threaded pipe port of a different size. Typical applications include industrial fluid transfer systems, pump discharge and suction lines, irrigation manifolds, and process piping where a step-down from a 2-inch hose to a 1-1/2-inch NPT port is required. The 304 stainless steel construction makes it appropriate for water, mild chemical, and general-purpose fluid service where carbon steel or brass fittings would be unsuitable due to corrosion exposure.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-installation fitting for fluid transfer systems requiring a 2-inch hose barb to 1-1/2-inch male NPTF reducing connection in 304 stainless steel.
Installation is typically performed by licensed plumbers or industrial pipefitters. Depressurize and drain the line completely before removing any existing fitting or installing this nipple. Apply an appropriate thread sealant or PTFE tape to the NPTF threads per IPC guidelines, and torque to the fitting size per standard practice - do not over-tighten, which can crack the threaded port. Secure the hose end with a properly rated clamp sized for a 2-inch barb to prevent blowoff under operating pressure.
