The MIDLAND INDUSTRIES 704048-0508 is a SAE 45-degree flare half union adapter designed to connect 5/16-inch male flared tubing to 1/2-inch male NPTF threaded fittings. Manufactured from lead-free brass, this adapter meets requirements for potable water and refrigerant line applications where lead-free materials are mandated. The 1/2-20 male flare thread mates with SAE 45-degree flared tubing ends, while the 1/2-14 NPTF male thread provides a pressure-tight mechanical seal on the pipe side. It is a compact fitting suited for plumbing, HVAC, and refrigeration technicians working with small-diameter tubing assemblies.
This adapter is intended for use in residential and light commercial applications involving copper, brass, aluminum, or steel tubing. It is commonly installed in refrigerant line sets, fuel gas lines, and fluid transfer systems where a transition from SAE 45-degree flared tubing to a male NPT fitting is required. The lead-free brass construction makes it appropriate for systems that must comply with lead-free plumbing codes. The operating temperature range of -40 to 250 degrees F covers the majority of standard HVAC and plumbing service conditions.
Designed for use with copper, brass, aluminum, and steel tubing in SAE 45-degree flare systems requiring a transition to 1/2-inch male NPTF threaded connections.
Installation is typically performed by licensed plumbers or HVAC technicians. Shut off system pressure and depressurize the line before disassembly or fitting installation. The flare end requires a properly formed SAE 45-degree flare on the tubing; inspect the flare face for cracks or irregularities before tightening. Apply thread sealant or tape to NPT threads as required by local code, noting that NPTF threads are designed to seal on thread interference but sealant is commonly used as additional assurance.
