The MIDLAND INDUSTRIES 195472 is a flexible rubber coupling designed to join pipe sections of two different diameters in drain, waste, and vent (DWV) plumbing systems. It connects a 3-inch pipe to a 1-1/2-inch pipe using a rubber body secured by a stainless steel band, creating a watertight, vibration-resistant joint. Rated to 150 psi and tested for service from -30 to 140 degrees F, this coupling meets SCH 40 schedule requirements. The 1-1/2-11-1/2 thread designation confirms its NPT-compatible sizing. Plumbers and pipefitters install this coupling where rigid connections are impractical or where minor misalignment must be accommodated.
This coupling is suited for residential and light commercial plumbing installations, particularly in DWV applications where two differently sized pipes must be joined without solvent-welded or threaded rigid fittings. Typical scenarios include tie-ins between existing cast iron or PVC lines during renovation work, transitions between SCH 40 plastic and older pipe materials, and installations where pipe movement or thermal expansion requires a degree of flexibility at the joint. The stainless steel band provides secure clamping force across the rubber sleeve.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-install flexible coupling for SCH 40 plumbing systems requiring a 3-inch to 1-1/2-inch transition connection.
Installation is performed by a licensed plumber or qualified pipefitter in accordance with the International Plumbing Code (IPC) and applicable local codes. Shut off the water supply and depressurize the line before removing any existing fitting or cutting into the pipe. Position the rubber sleeve over both pipe ends, verify full engagement on each side, then tighten the stainless steel band clamps evenly to the manufacturer-specified feel - do not over-torque. Inspect the joint for leaks under normal operating pressure before returning the system to service.
