The MIDLAND INDUSTRIES 18085 is a brass reducing union designed to connect two compression fittings of different sizes in a single inline joint. It transitions from a 7/8-inch compression connection on one end to a 3/8-inch compression connection on the other, making it suitable for size-reduction runs in refrigeration, HVAC, and plumbing tubing systems. The fitting is rated to 75 psi and handles temperatures from -65 to 250 degrees F. The 1-1/8-18 thread specification and 1.18-inch hex drive allow installation with standard hand tools. Licensed plumbers, HVAC technicians, and refrigeration mechanics are the typical installers.
This reducing union is used in applications where copper, aluminum, or thermoplastic tubing lines change diameter at a union point. Common install scenarios include refrigerant line modifications, domestic water supply branches, pneumatic control tubing, and equipment hookups where a size transition is required inline. The center-to-center measurement of 1.18 inches makes it compact enough for tight equipment cabinets and panel spaces. It is appropriate for both residential and light commercial service work.
Designed for use with copper, aluminum, and thermoplastic tubing in compression-style fitting applications.
Installation is performed by a licensed plumber, HVAC technician, or refrigeration mechanic following applicable IPC or IFGC guidelines for the system type. Shut off and depressurize the line fully before disassembling any fittings. Compression fittings require proper ferrule seating and firm wrench torque without over-tightening, which can deform the ferrule. Inspect tubing ends for burrs and ensure cuts are square before inserting into the fitting body.
