The MERIT BRASS 01612-9640 is a concentric pipe reducer fitting used to transition between a 6-inch pipe and a 2-1/2-inch pipe within a piping system. Manufactured from 316L stainless steel, this fitting offers strong resistance to corrosion and is well suited for demanding process, industrial, and mechanical piping applications. The Schedule 10 wall designation keeps weight low while maintaining structural integrity for moderate-pressure service. Both ends connect via butt weld, creating a full-penetration joint that meets the demands of high-purity or high-cycle systems. Licensed plumbers, pipefitters, and mechanical contractors are the typical trades handling this fitting.
This concentric reducer is designed for use in process piping, chemical handling, food and beverage, marine, and industrial mechanical systems where 316L stainless steel is specified for its elevated molybdenum content and improved pitting resistance. The concentric geometry centers the pipe bore on the same axis, making it appropriate for horizontal runs where maintaining a consistent centerline elevation is required. It is also used in HVAC chilled-water and hydronic piping systems where stainless steel is called out by specification.
Designed as an OEM-style butt weld concentric reducer for Schedule 10 stainless steel piping systems requiring a 6-inch to 2-1/2-inch transition.
Installation requires a qualified pipefitter or welder certified for stainless steel butt weld work. Purge the pipe interior with inert gas during welding to prevent oxidation of the 316L weld zone. Depressurize and drain the piping system completely before cutting into an existing line. All weld procedures should comply with applicable codes such as ASME B31.3 for process piping or ASME B31.9 for building services piping.
