The M-D BUILDING PRODUCTS 87916 is a closed-cell foam wall plate insulator designed to reduce air infiltration through standard switch and outlet openings in exterior or interior walls. The foam gasket seats behind the wall plate and compresses against the electrical box to block drafts that pass through the gap between the box and the finished wall surface. Each insulator includes a cut-out sized for GFCI outlet configurations in addition to standard switch and duplex outlet openings. This product is UL listed and sold in packs of six, making it a practical quantity for whole-room or whole-home weatherization work.
Wall plate insulators are used in residential and light commercial settings wherever switch boxes and outlet boxes penetrate an insulated wall assembly. They are most commonly installed on exterior walls where air leakage around electrical boxes contributes to drafts and energy loss. Electricians, weatherization contractors, and energy auditors regularly specify these gaskets as part of air-sealing scopes. They are equally suited for new construction rough-in finishing and retrofit energy upgrades on existing structures.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement gasket for standard single-gang switch and outlet wall plates in residential and light commercial electrical installations, with a cut-out configuration compatible with GFCI outlet faceplates.
Installation is performed by electricians or qualified weatherization technicians. Before servicing any electrical box, turn off the circuit at the panel and verify the outlet or switch is de-energized with a non-contact voltage tester. Remove the existing wall plate, seat the foam gasket flat against the wall surface over the electrical box opening, and reinstall the wall plate. Work should comply with applicable NEC requirements for outlet and switch installation in the jurisdiction.
