The M.A. FORD 40318750 is a solid carbide spotting drill designed to create precise starter holes for follow-on drilling operations. Built to a 120-degree drill point angle, it establishes accurate center locations that reduce drill walk and improve hole-position repeatability. The cutting diameter is 3/16 inch (0.1875 inch), the overall length is 2 inches, and the flute length is 1 inch. Two spiral flutes with a 21-degree helix angle clear chips efficiently during the spotting pass. The bright, uncoated finish suits general-purpose use across a range of workpiece materials. This tool is installed and run by machinists and CNC operators working in production and job-shop environments.
The 40318750 is a single-ended, right-hand-cut spotting drill suited for general-purpose spotting applications on machining centers, drill presses, and manual mills. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard 3/16-inch collets and drill chucks without modification. Series 403 tools are positioned for everyday production use where consistent spotting geometry and solid carbide rigidity are required. This drill is appropriate for typical shop materials where a pre-spot is needed before a twist drill, reamer, or tapping operation follows.
Designed as a general-purpose OEM-style spotting drill compatible with any spindle accepting a straight-cylindrical 3/16-inch shank, including standard collet chucks and keyless drill chucks on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual mills.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC operator. Confirm spindle speed and feed rate are set per the shop's speeds-and-feeds data for solid carbide tooling in the target material before running. Secure the shank fully in the collet or chuck and verify runout before engaging the workpiece. Never use a spotting drill as a substitute for a center drill in applications requiring a countersink seat for a center support.
