The M.A. FORD 17850000AW is a 5-flute solid carbide square end mill engineered for high-performance milling in demanding materials. Built on the Series 178W platform, this stub-length end mill carries an ALtima finish and a 38-degree spiral helix angle, improving chip evacuation and tool life compared to standard coatings. The variable index geometry reduces chatter and vibration during aggressive cuts. With a 0.5000-inch mill diameter, a 5/8-inch length of cut, and a Weldon flat shank, this tool is intended for use in CNC machining centers and manual mills where rigidity and repeatable positioning are required. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users.
This end mill is suited for milling operations in materials classified under the primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, P, and S - covering hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, carbon and alloy steels, and heat-resistant superalloys. The stub length profile provides added rigidity for shorter reach applications, making it a practical choice for face milling, slotting, and profiling where tool deflection must be minimized. It is centercutting, which allows plunge entry when needed without a pre-drilled pilot hole.
Designed for use in standard 1/2-inch end mill holders and Weldon-style tool holders; compatible with material groups H, K, M, P, and S as classified in the supplier specifications. Verify holder clamping length against the 5/8-inch length of cut before setup.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer's toolholder torque and runout specifications. Ensure the spindle and all power sources are fully de-energized and locked out before changing or setting tooling. Seat the Weldon flat fully against the setscrew in the holder and confirm runout with a dial indicator before cutting. Do not exceed the tool's rated cutting parameters for the workpiece material being machined.
