The M.A. FORD. 17840604A is a solid carbide corner radius end mill designed for high-performance material removal in demanding machining applications. It features a 0.4062-inch mill diameter, a 0.03-inch corner radius, and five flutes arranged in a right-hand spiral with close pitch. The tool carries an ALTiN (ALtima) PVD coating applied via physical vapor deposition, which improves heat resistance and extends tool life at elevated cutting speeds. The 7/16-inch straight-cylindrical shank fits standard toolholders used in CNC machining centers and manual mills. Machinists and tooling specialists install this end mill for both roughing and finishing passes in a single setup.
This end mill is suited for cutting steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium - material groups P, M, K, and S. The 0.03-inch corner radius reduces stress concentrations at the cutting edge, making it appropriate for profiling, slotting, and finishing contoured features where a sharp corner would risk chipping. The 7/8-inch length of cut and 2.75-inch overall length fit standard reach requirements for most cavity and profile work. The centercutting geometry allows plunge entry without a pre-drilled pilot hole.
Designed for use with standard cylindrical-bore toolholders. Suitable for machining steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium in CNC and manual milling applications per Series 178 specifications.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is clean and free of debris before seating the shank. Torque the toolholder retention mechanism according to the toolholder manufacturer's specifications. Confirm runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, and verify feed and speed parameters are appropriate for the workpiece material and coating type.
