The LEVITON TELCOM 8381-I is a transient voltage surge suppression (TVSS) receptacle rated at 20 amps and 125 volts, designed to protect connected equipment from damaging voltage spikes and surges on the AC power line. This unit includes an integral alarm function that provides a visual or audible indication when surge protection components have been compromised or require attention. It is installed in place of a standard duplex receptacle and is typically specified in commercial, institutional, or light-industrial environments where sensitive electronics or networked equipment require point-of-use surge protection. Electricians and low-voltage system installers are the primary trades that handle this device.
The 8381-I is suited for locations where continuous monitoring of surge protection status is required, such as server rooms, communications closets, medical office equipment areas, and other facilities where equipment downtime carries significant cost. The alarmed status indicator allows facilities staff or technicians to identify a degraded protection condition without removing the device from service. The ivory (IV) finish is consistent with standard commercial wiring device aesthetics.
Designed as a direct-wiring-device replacement for standard 20-amp, 125-volt duplex receptacle locations where point-of-use transient voltage surge suppression with alarm monitoring is required.
Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) requirements for receptacle replacement and surge protection devices. Always de-energize the branch circuit at the panel and verify absence of voltage with a meter before beginning work. Confirm the existing circuit is rated for 20 amps before installing this device. Do not install in locations where the ambient conditions exceed the device rating or where the alarm indicator cannot be periodically inspected.
