The KENNAMETAL 7090644 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert designed for general-purpose and interrupted-cut turning operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. Manufactured from a carbide substrate with an AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) coating, this insert carries the KCU10B manufacturer grade — a designation suited for tough cutting conditions where edge toughness and thermal resistance are priorities. The insert features an 80-degree diamond shape, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0313-inch corner radius, with an MR chip breaker geometry. Four cutting edges are available per insert, maximizing cost-per-edge value for high-volume turning operations.
This insert is appropriate for turning steel, stainless steel, and difficult-to-machine alloys in production environments. The MR chip breaker geometry is engineered for medium-range chip control, making it well suited for medium-depth roughing and semi-finishing passes. The neutral hand designation means the insert seats without directional orientation, simplifying toolholder selection. Machinists, CNC operators, and toolroom technicians in job shops and production facilities are the primary users.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for standard CNMG 432 toolholders accepting a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thickness, neutral-hand insert with an N clearance and M tolerance designation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC toolroom technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool turret or toolpost is locked before indexing or replacing inserts. Use a torque wrench appropriate for the toolholder clamping screw to avoid over-tightening, which can fracture the insert. Verify the insert seats flush in the pocket with no debris before clamping, and confirm the correct insert orientation before resuming cuts.
