The KENNAMETAL 6688280 is a straight-shank indexable drill body designed for use in the KenTIP FS tooling system. It accepts interchangeable KenTIP FS drill tip inserts, allowing fast tip changes without removing the body from the spindle. The body features a 5/8-inch straight-cylindrical shank and a 3xD depth-to-diameter ratio, making it suited for moderate-depth hole-making operations. Through-coolant capability is built in, supporting high-pressure coolant delivery directly to the cutting zone to extend tip life and aid chip evacuation. The toolholder style designation is KTFS. This body weighs 0.25 pounds and measures approximately 4.45 inches in overall length.
This drill body is used in CNC machining centers, lathes with live tooling, and drilling machines where indexable drill systems are preferred over solid carbide or brazed tooling. The 3xD configuration is common in production environments machining steel, cast iron, stainless, and aluminum where hole depth does not exceed three times the drill diameter. The straight-cylindrical shank suits ER collet chucks, hydraulic chucks, and similar straight-bore toolholding systems. Installation and tool changes are typically performed by machinists and toolroom personnel in both job shop and production settings.
Designed for use with the Kennametal KenTIP FS indexable drill tip system using KTFS-style toolholders. Compatible with straight-bore toolholding systems accepting a 5/8-inch shank diameter, including ER collet chucks and hydraulic chucks.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool changer or turret is indexed to a safe position before mounting or removing the drill body. Secure the shank in a clean, burr-free toolholder bore and verify coolant passages are clear before initiating through-coolant flow. Follow the machine tool manufacturer and Kennametal system guidelines for runout tolerances and clamping torque specifications.
