The KENNAMETAL 6397372 is a solid carbide milling insert in the SNHJ series, engineered for high-performance metal removal in demanding machining environments. Carrying manufacturer grade KCSM40, this insert features a dual-layer TiAlN and TiN PVD coating that extends tool life when cutting steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. The square insert geometry delivers four usable cutting edges with a neutral hand orientation, a positive rake angle, and chamfered and honed cutting edge preparation. At 0.178 inches thick with a 0.125-inch corner radius and a maximum depth of cut of 0.5 inches, it is suited for high-feed face milling and shoulder milling operations performed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians.
This insert is designed for use in the KSSM cutter series and targets primary workpiece materials classified under ISO P, M, and S categories: carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, superalloys, and titanium alloys. It is appropriate for both roughing and finishing passes where a consistent chip load and edge integrity are required. The DH chip breaker geometry supports controlled chip evacuation across a range of feed rates. The insert is held in place by screw-type clamping, which is standard in most SNHJ-compatible toolholders. Typical applications include aerospace component machining, general precision manufacturing, and job-shop milling where insert interchangeability across a single cutter body is a priority.

Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the spindle fully de-energized and the machine in a locked-out state per applicable LOTO procedures. Seat the insert fully against all pocket walls before tightening the clamping screw to ensure proper edge registration. Inspect the pocket bore and seating surfaces for chips or debris before installing a fresh insert. Follow the cutter manufacturer tooling manual for recommended clamping torque and insert indexing procedures.
