The KENNAMETAL 6389409 is a straight-shank indexable drill body from the KenTIP FS series, designed for precision drilling in metal-cutting applications. Built to a 5xD depth-to-diameter ratio, this drill body accepts interchangeable KenTIP FS carbide tip inserts, allowing fast tip changes without removing the body from the spindle. The shank diameter is 5/16 inch, the overall length is 85 mm (3.35 inches), the flute length is 43.10 mm (1.70 inches), and the shank length is 38.61 mm (1.52 inches). The assembly weighs approximately 0.04 pounds. Machinists and toolroom professionals working with CNC machining centers, lathes with live tooling, or drill presses will find this body suited to moderate-depth hole-making operations.
The 6389409 drill body is intended for use in metal-cutting environments where repeatable hole geometry and insert replaceability are priorities. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard collet chucks, hydraulic chucks, and milling machine spindles that accept 5/16-inch straight-shank tooling. Typical applications include through-hole and blind-hole drilling in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and similar machinable materials on CNC machining centers and manual machines. The 5xD ratio supports moderately deep holes without the need for peck cycles in many setups.
Designed for use with KENNAMETAL KenTIP FS series interchangeable drill tip inserts using the KTFS toolholder interface. Requires a machine spindle or chuck capable of accepting a 5/16-inch straight cylindrical shank.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before mounting or removing the drill body. Seat the straight shank fully into the collet or chuck and torque the clamping nut or screws according to the chuck manufacturer's specifications. Inspect the KenTIP FS tip seating interface for chips or debris before inserting a tip, and follow KENNAMETAL's published tip-torque procedure for the KTFS interface to avoid tip ejection during cutting.
