The KENNAMETAL 6388792 is a carbide replaceable tip drill designed for high-performance hole-making in metal cutting applications. Built on the KTFS series platform, this drill accepts an HPG geometry insert tip manufactured from solid carbide with an AlTiN coating applied via PVD process. The 143-degree drill point angle is suited for aggressive penetration rates in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The KCP15A grade designation indicates a specific carbide substrate and binder formulation optimized for turning and drilling wear resistance. This tool is installed and operated by machinists, tool-and-die professionals, and CNC setup technicians in production and job-shop environments.
This replaceable tip drill is used in CNC machining centers and drill presses where repeatable hole quality at 14.5mm diameter is required. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost by allowing the carbide tip to be swapped without discarding the steel shank body. It is a standard stocking item suited for general-purpose drilling in manufacturing environments. No coolant-through capability is present in this configuration, so external coolant or dry cutting strategies apply depending on the workpiece material and cutting parameters.
Designed for use with KTFS series replaceable tip drill bodies accepting an S-seat insert size. Tip is compatible with KTFS series shanks configured for the HPG insert geometry. Verify shank series, seat size, and insert geometry before ordering.
Replaceable tip drills of this type are set up by qualified machinists following the tool manufacturer's torque and seating procedures for the specific shank body. Ensure the drill body and tip seat are clean and free of chips before seating the carbide tip. Do not exceed the recommended runout tolerance for the shank body, as excessive runout accelerates tip wear and reduces hole quality. Follow shop safety protocols and machine lockout procedures before changing any cutting tool insert.
