The KENNAMETAL 6388701 is a solid carbide replaceable tip drill insert designed for use in KTFSS-series modular drilling systems. Manufactured under the KCP15A grade with a fine-grain carbide substrate, this insert features an AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) coating applied via PVD process for improved heat and wear resistance. The HPG insert geometry and 180-degree drill point angle are engineered to deliver clean entry and exit in demanding ferrous materials. It is installed and serviced by machinists and CNC tooling technicians in production and job-shop environments.

This replaceable tip insert is intended for drilling operations in steel and cast iron workpieces, covering ISO material groups P and K. The KTFSS series system is suited for applications including standard drilling, inclined surface entry and exit, and stacked-plate drilling. With a 2-flute, 2-margin, helical flute configuration and regular spiral type, it provides stable chip evacuation and consistent hole quality. Coolant-through capability is not included in this design.

Installation Notes

Installation and indexing of replaceable carbide tip inserts should be performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling personnel. Power down and lock out the spindle before removing or seating the insert. Use the manufacturer-specified torque key or clamp tool for the ZA seat to ensure proper clamping force without damaging the insert or pocket. Inspect the insert seat for chips or debris before installation to maintain accurate tip runout.
