The KENNAMETAL 6388685 is a carbide replaceable tip drill from the KTFSS series, designed for precision hole-making in steel and cast iron. The drill tip carries part number KTFSS21500HPGM and is manufactured from fine-grain solid carbide with a PVD-applied AlTiN coating. It features a 21.5mm cutting diameter, a 2-flute helical configuration with a 2-margin geometry, and an HPG insert geometry optimized for chip control. The KCP15A manufacturer grade makes this tip well-suited for demanding ferrous machining applications. Installation and tip changes are handled by a clamp-style insert holding method. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling technicians are the primary users of this product.
This replaceable tip drill is intended for use in production machining environments where consistent hole quality in steel and cast iron is required. Its design supports drilling into inclined exit surfaces and stacked plates, making it applicable across a range of fixturing and workholding setups. The standard point type and regular spiral configuration suit general-purpose drilling cycles on CNC machining centers and drill presses. It does not include coolant-through capability, so external coolant delivery should be planned accordingly when machining heat-sensitive materials or at higher feed rates.
Designed as a replaceable tip for KTFSS-series drill bodies accepting the Z insert seat size. Tip ISO number is KTFSS21500HPGM. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO material code P) and cast iron (ISO material code K).
Replaceable carbide drill tips of this type are installed and serviced by qualified CNC machining technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the tip. Use the appropriate torque tool as specified by the drill body manufacturer - do not over-tighten or substitute fasteners. Inspect the insert seat for damage or debris before each tip installation to ensure proper seating and runout.
