The KENNAMETAL 6388656 is a carbide replaceable tip drill designed for high-productivity hole-making in steel and cast iron. This drill uses the KTFSS03750HPG tip - a solid carbide insert with an AlTiN PVD coating and HPG geometry - seated in a compatible KTFS-series body. The 3/8 inch (0.3750 inch) cutting diameter and 180-degree included drill point angle suit standard through-hole and blind-hole drilling operations. The two-flute, regular helical spiral design promotes chip evacuation in ferrous materials. This style of replaceable tip drill is typically installed and changed out by machinists and CNC setup technicians in production and job-shop environments.
This drill is built for drilling steel and cast iron workpieces, including applications involving inclined exits and stacked plates - demanding conditions where a rigid, coated solid carbide tip provides consistent performance. The KTFS series is suited to CNC machining centers and drill presses where tool change frequency and tip-to-body repeatability matter. The insert seat size is I, and the tip is held by a clamping method. Coolant-through capability is not available on this configuration.
Designed for use with KTFS-series replaceable tip drill bodies accepting an I-seat insert. Compatible primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO material code P) and cast iron (ISO material code K). The ISO number for the tip insert is KTFSS03750HPG.
Installation and tip changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC technician with the machine powered down and the spindle fully stopped. Use the appropriate torx or clamping key specified for the KTFS body to seat the tip firmly before running. Inspect the insert seat for chips or debris before seating a new tip. Do not exceed the recommended speeds and feeds for the KCP15A grade and workpiece material combination as published in the manufacturer tooling data.
