The KENNAMETAL 6388534 is a replaceable-tip carbide drill designed for high-productivity hole-making in steel and cast iron. The drill body accepts a solid carbide KTFSS-series tip with a KCP15A grade insert and HPG geometry, secured by a clamp-style holding method. An AlTiN coating applied via PVD process provides thermal resistance and wear protection during aggressive drilling cycles. The cutting diameter is 16.1mm (0.6339 inches), with a flute length of 8.0mm and an overall projection of 0.4548 inches. Two helical flutes with a regular spiral promote chip evacuation. This tool is suited for CNC machining centers and production drilling environments where replaceable-tip systems reduce tooling cost per hole.
This replaceable-tip drill is used in production machining of steel and cast iron components, including structural parts, housings, and fabricated assemblies. It is engineered to handle demanding applications including drilling through inclined exit surfaces and stacked plates - conditions that challenge standard drill geometries. The KTFS series platform allows tip replacement without removing the shank body, reducing downtime on production machines. Machinists and CNC operators in job shops, automotive suppliers, and general metal fabrication facilities are the primary users.
Designed for use with the KTFS-series replaceable-tip drill body platform. Compatible tip seat size is U. Intended for primary workpiece materials coded P (Steel) and K (Cast Iron) per ISO material classification.
Installation and tip replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and de-energize the machine spindle before seating or removing the carbide tip. Use the correct torque driver and clamp hardware specified by the KTFS tool body to ensure proper tip retention - do not substitute fasteners. Verify runout and tool projection with an indicator before first cut, particularly when drilling inclined or stacked workpieces.
