The KENNAMETAL 6140821 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading M6x1.00 metric holes in ferrous materials. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with an oxide coating, it delivers reliable performance in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes than a standard plug tap. With a 45-degree helix angle, the fast flute style efficiently evacuates chips upward out of the hole, reducing the risk of chip packing in interrupted or deep cuts. Overall length is 2.5 inches with a 16 mm thread length, making it a compact, production-ready tool for machine tapping operations.
This tap is suited for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads where right-hand M6x1.00 metric threads are required. The modified bottoming chamfer is particularly useful in blind-hole applications where full thread depth close to the hole bottom is critical. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The cobalt construction adds heat resistance for tougher alloys and higher-speed tapping cycles compared to standard M2 HSS taps.
Designed for machine tapping of M6x1.00 right-hand metric threads in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. Suitable for use in CNC machining centers, tapping heads, and drill presses with appropriate tap holders for straight-shank tools.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer guidelines for tapping speeds and feeds for cobalt HSS taps in the target workpiece material. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the spindle is at zero speed before loading the tap into the holder. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Inspect tap condition between uses and discard at first sign of chipping or excessive wear.
