The KENNAMETAL 5697974 is a solid carbide turning insert designated DNMG542RN in ANSI coding and DNMG190608RN in ISO coding, finished in a multilayer CVD TiCN/Al2O3/TiOCN coating under the KCP10B manufacturer grade. The 55-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape provides a sharp, defined cutting geometry suited to demanding metal removal. With a neutral hand orientation, a negative rake angle, and a chamfered and honed cutting edge style, this insert is engineered for high wear-resistance on steel and cast iron and moderate wear-resistance with toughness on aluminum and non-ferrous materials. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists working in production environments are the primary installers of this insert.
This insert fits into the KENLOC series toolholding system and is designed for multi-use turning operations including turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring. The RN chip breaker designation targets roughing and medium machining applications. Primary workpiece materials are steel and cast iron (ISO P), with secondary application to aluminum and non-ferrous materials (ISO N). The insert seats via clamp or pin holding methods in compatible KENLOC-style toolholders. It carries four usable cutting edges, maximizing value per insert in high-volume turning programs.

Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Torque the clamp or pin to the toolholder manufacturer's specification — do not over-tighten, as this can fracture carbide. Confirm insert seating and edge engagement before running the spindle.
